I explicitly remember Tim Meadows letting us all know that it’s not habit forming, the safest drug there is, and we don’t want no part of that shit.

But even the text you propose still puts the onus on the host to say “sorry, but please leave the grubby-fingered, non-corner stickable rugrats at home”.  Not really that much less pressure than his original text, in my view.

Is there any less pressure on the host if he says “Oh great, I’d love to come.  I have the kids that weekend, mind if they come along?”  Short of just assuming the kids can’t come, there is no way for the Dad in question to ask that doesn’t force the OP to be the bad guy if he is really adamant about the kids not…

Assume may have been the wrong word, but whatever the right one is, I feel ok doing it within my circle of friends and I assure you it hasn’t been a problem.

Single dad with three kids (3,4,7) here. The dad above, as Salty points out, sends as good a text as he can: States his intentions on bringing them while giving Monster* the opportunity to politely correct him. There is no other reason to word his text the way he did.
