lol no

Jesus Christ, Joker is the fucking worst.

Are you nine?  You want a movie to win best picture because it will create a “shit show”?  Pathetic.

The Dark Knight died a hero, while Joker lived long enough to get a nomination.

Well, it’s not quite the same thing. AFAIK the industry doesn’t have a pattern of ignoring people like Baumbach at Oscars time.

11 nominations... really?  Does this film have to dominate 2019 so much?  It wasn't even the best Martin Scorsese knock off in a year where an actual Martin Scorsese film came out.  Its King of Comedy meets Taxi Driver by way of the Hangover directo .  Yes Phoenix and the score are great.  Does that make it worthy of

Counterpoint: There only great movie nominated is ‘Parasite’, the rest are solidly in to the ‘pretty good’ to ‘meh’ range.

Is Joker going to become this years Green Book? A shitty film that wins best picture but anyone with a hint of film taste thinks is terrible.

I just watched it tonight. My criticism (comment #670) is less that it trades in the comforts of the original trilogy, and more that it doesn’t weave them together into a coherent story. The Force Awakens absolutely trades in nostalgia, but moved me. It was a compelling story, in which all the characters had purpose

You’re honestly equating financial success with quality?  Kindly STFU, adults are speaking.

I don’t know if Abrams personally disliked Rian Johnson’s choices or if he was ordered to do so to appease the whiners.

So fucking what?

Two major takeaways on this..

“Show, don’t tell” doesn’t mean “characters should never verbally communicate significant information.” It means the audience should experience a story, rather than having its importance related to them.

(From Wikipedia: ‘Show, don’t tell’ is a technique used in various kinds of texts to allow the reader to experience

I saw it last night, and I didn’t hate it. It’s a very flawed film, but it has great performances and lovely visuals. But I do hate the reversal of Rey’s parentage, quite a lot.

‘this is a story terrified of challenging its audience in any way’

“It’s a bit of a meta approach to the story. I don’t think that people go to Star Wars to be told, ‘This doesn’t matter.’”

Since we’re nitpicking here, can we talk about J.J. Abrams pulling another case of The Not-Gays? He did it with Star Trek a goddamn decade ago and he did it here too.

When I heard about Keri Russell and Naomi Ackie’s characters I was like “What the heck are they gonna do?” Then they spend most of their screen-time

At this point, personally, I’d rather he make a Knives Out sequel or an original sci-fi fantasy than deal with the Star Wars fanbase for another decade, both for his sake and mine. And I’d suspect they’d be better films anyway.

Are they still giving Johnson his own trilogy at least?
