I love this feature. I’m glad books coverage is picking up here, even if I’m stuck in the greys and no one will ever know I appreciate them. Stupid Kinja.

Whoa! I was not anticipating this being good at all. Very interesting.
It’s the worst. Worse than the Venom fuckers and the Bundy fuckers.
I cannot stan(d) that term. I don’t know why. It just irks the fuck out of me. I can barely read these messages without grinding through my tooth enamel.
For the record, I have NO part in this. Jesus the internet is weird.
From the beginning I specified “especially if you’re a reporter.”
I keep seeing this trailer and it keeps annoying the shit out of me. I must be making some wrong life choices.
I’m like the one person on earth who never read Cat Person. But I did pre-order this.
It’s not for me, either. I chose to go to a school that didn’t even have a Greek system. But, like, Howard has such an enormous cultural impact on the city. It seems hard to imagine not having picked up some of the basics by pure osmosis, especially if you’re a reporter who covers life in the city.
Anyone who has lived in DC for more than 15 months should know what this is, regardless of their background, and especially if she is a reporter whose job it is to learn and contextualize things about her city.
I’m a big fan of Megan Abbott, but I would not describe her as a thriller writer. I’d describe her as chronicler of female group dynamics and the dark places it can lead. Like Margaret Atwood but with less sci-fi and more mystery.
Myers might have coined it, but Tina Fey popularized it in criticism of Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, which is part of why I’ve never understood it. Because that show was genuinely funny most of the time.
I guess I’ve mostly heard it as an accusation levied against the old Daily Show when Stewart was in charge and ... well I thought he was really funny most of the time, so I don’t really get what the problem is if you laugh AND want to applaud, too.
Go to hell with this garbage.
John Oliver is the only can’t miss of the political late night hosts for me. I sometimes watch Sam Bee, too. But I’ve gotta say, the “exasperated-sigh, I-don’t-even-need-to-try-to-joke-about-this” schtick is not why I watch either of those shows and, particularly for Oliver, don’t take up very much of the total…
As I recall, that book was ABSOLUTELY BONKERS. I don’t know if it’s filmable.
Hello, darling! I’m trying to be a better commenter (here, at The Avocado, and on The Solute). But it’s a bit of splitting the baby, for sure.
Always a delight to see you, my friend.
I’ve seen some people, including me, use the “post” section of their profile to note their old usernames.
If you ever properly signed up for a Disqus account, then it exists. If you were one of those whose old AVC commenting account just meshed into being a Disqus account, it’s probably lost forever. I somehow seem to lose every time there’s a change. I lost my original Scrawler account when the site switched to Disqus…
