It’s not one or the other. Human damage to that reef predates both the tsunami and the movie. There’s been a project to grow and replace reef there since before my first visit, which was 2002. But the tsunami did do a lot of damage.

This is odd. I’ve been to that beach and according to my tour guide, the coral in the area was destroyed by the tsunami, which blew so much dead coral into the beach area that it is virtually unswimmable. You will tear your feet apart.

From a news article I read they state there is no security footage, but they claim a police officer witnessed it. The fact that the police officer supposedly saw this crime and did not arrest him on the spot for it should tell you how credible the allegations are.
