You’re pretty close to the mark actually. The wheel doesn’t necessarily need to shatter (you may want to load something behind it to dissipate load, which would require the wheel to be intact) but the issue is likely one of wheel kinematics. I’m guessing here that the wheel turned inboard more than was expected…

Any vehicle can make it. The road is totally paved now from Ulaanbataar to both the Russian and Chinese border. There is also a paved highway from Shanghai all the way to Kazakhstan. The road may not be the 405, but it is two lane highway. As long as it’s not snowing you should be fine.

Engines are pretty durable and can be fixed and rebuilt. I’m going to have to come clean here with some Jalop shame. I’ve never worn out an engine.
