This is kind of why I feel like a plug-in hybrid (with decent electric range) is the best current day option for a lot of people. They can operate on full electric for daily commuting, but when they do need to drive 400+ miles for whatever reason they can still just hop in and go.

In the end, it ends up being a case of if you value total green house emissions vs land fill & recyclability vs total energy consumption.
