it would be pretty great to have an episode presented as a series of flashbacks, in classic TV manner, but The Doctor keeps running through the background of them in the wrong order and we have to piece together what's happening 

I think it’s just a matter of semantics. Nothing in the Timeless Child really has an effect on anything in the future for the Doctor. It’s just rewriting their past in a phenomenally stupid way.
