i wish that i had a fraction of this girl's courage, who has chosen to go public with her story ... and she rightly feels outraged by the court-imposed gag order ... silence only serves to perpetuate the sexual-assault status quo and compounds the suffering of its victims

you don't know what question the reporter asked her, and she'd been awoken in the middle of the night! for all you know, they asked her if she was the mother of "james holmes living in aurora, colorado at the x apartments who'd just been arrested for a shooting spree in a movie theater" ... "you have the right person"

in the realm of yearbook photos, this looks pretty benign ... my guess is that some guy on the facing page looked like he wasn't wearing pants and was holding an ax behind his back ... i know that mine looks like i'm a tractable, sweet girly-girl ... lies, damned lies

there's too much pain to wrap one's head around here ... unless, of course, one is a right-wing christofascist blaming this horror on liberals, gun-control advocates, and atheists ... they evidently don't feel pain, just righteous indignation

glad you are so sure, in the face of conflicting reports and after saying yourself that "it's hard to judge the details" ... i hope that walker's victims can acquire the same sense of satisfaction with this sentence

for well over 10 years, joe paterno knew that jerry sandusky was a likely pedophile (sandusky even admitted to inappropriate shower conduct with a boy in 1998) but continued to allow sandusky to use penn state's name and facilities to have intimate contact with especially vulnerable children ... during the course of

the "you have the right person" comes from a phone call holmes' mother received in the middle of the night from a reporter ... for all we know, they asked "a james holmes living in aurora, colorado at the x apartments has been arrested for a mass shooting at a movie theater ... are you his mother?"

maybe he had a credit card?

i suspect that millions of parents are concerned about what their children might do (lie, cheat, steal, assault, dui ...), but few will even begin to imagine that their child, especially one with no violent criminal record, will turn out to be a mass murderer

walker was convicted on all 28 counts ... it was the guy who got 50 years who was only convicted of 7 counts (4 counts of forcible sodomy + 2 counts of kidnapping + 1 count of unlawful entry)

in this case, the jury decided on the sentence ... prosecutors asked for 40 years, but they gave him 20 ... in military courts the jury can decide the sentence and evidently did so in this case ... prosecutors asked for 40 years, and the jury gave him 20

i'm not going to worry about walker getting ptsd, especially since he's eligible for parole in 6 years ... his victims and their risk of ptsd, however, are of great concern to me ... and they will be serving a life sentence

i heard it on npr and have read it in several tx rags ... http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/military/article/Sexual-predator-gets-20-years-3724859.php

it doesn't help that he'll be eligible for parole in just 6 years

please, do ... our brains are programmed to go haywire in the face of trauma, so "negative effects" are a good sign that you are normal ... and i promise you, you can heal ... it's just that it's hard to do alone

yep ... insurers negotiate huge discounts for care ... discounts that the uninsured don't receive, so the least able to pay must pay the most

$700 sounds like a lot to me ... and insanely cruel to exact from a crime victim ... i am sorry to hear it, but i hope that you are getting followup care

a man who uses a position of trust and the authority of the u.s. government to rape women under his care and supervision ought to receive the stiffest penalty available ... in this case, it was life in prison, so 20 yrs kind of pales in my mind ... after all, his victims got life sentences

sorry if my sarcasm did not come across, but anyone who peruses my body of comments (which i try to do before going off on someone, particularly on the sensitive issue of rape) will find that i am a) a violent rape survivor who still wrestles on a daily basis with the trauma, and b) a staunch advocate for abuse and
