I think it is interesting to dwell on what happens when the pursuit for that peace of mind gives way to real conflict. The combatants can feel reassured (by catergorising the other as the enemy) that they understand the world and themselves but in reality they are putting themselves are risk.

X and XII are arguably better than any of the entries before it, especially in terms of mechanics and scope.

I think it's something you should play to appreciate the massive influence it was and still is on the genre, but not so much something you should play because it's one of the best JRPGs ever made.

Played most of those. One game I would add is The world ends with you, which is my favorite game of all time. The game has a fantastic story and is very innovative. I hope there will be a (non-smartphone) sequel some day.

Final Fantasy XIII wasn't "dungeons", though. That was the entire game. It's no different than the levels in a shooter or a beat-em-up, but focused exclusively on JRPG combat and story. The only thing that X has on XIII is the ability to backtrack (as if it really makes much of a difference) and Blitzball, really.…
