I actually think the last episode stands up pretty well as a series finale, if you ignore the last minute or so.

It really felt like he finally realized being so relentlessly grim just made the oddities of his writing stand out and become hilarious, so he might as well just make a movie that’s actually trying to be funny a lot of the time.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Some segments of fanbases can get a little too...whatever...about some things, but fanbases in general can absolutely make things even better, too. There are a lot of really great fanfics, fan animations, etc. out there for a lot of shows.
