I think the Tesla car has similar systems like the Google cars. At least a couple of years ago the sensors could not detect snow or ice banks other than by sight (radar just goes through them and so on).

The people that do predictions say: when you get more and more sharing economy and combine that with autonomous driving... then most likely: most people won’t own a car anymore.
