Cecilia, thank you so much for talking about your memories of FFXI... it takes me right back just thinking about it all the time!

I have never agreed with a Kotaku article as much as I have this one.
I totally agree re: the combat system. I remember the first time I entered a multi-party battle as the only BLM (sub RDM for the INT boost—fight me). There was a CRUCIAL moment I had to cast “Sleep,” and if I didn’t do it on the perfect split second, we’d all be killed immediately and sent back somewhere far-flung. I…
This was a pleasantly well-timed article to come across. I have recently ranted about my experiences in FFXI while streaming FFXIV. Like most of the comments in response to your article, FFXI was a keystone moment in my gaming life as well.
11 was my first MMO and at a time in my life when I was damn near miserable. I was living alone at the time and most of my friends moved on after high school. I only played for about a year and a half and then moved on to WoW where the time demands were much less. But 11 will always be my most fond memory of online…
YES! Thank you so much for writing this! I played FFXI for YEARS and made some amazing friends during a really rough period of my childhood. As a thief I had a lot of trouble finding parties so I spent most of my time hanging out with other friends or grouping with the people in my linkshell. It was incredible.
No other MMORPG will compare to FFXI. My friends and I would plan out everything, because a trip to another city (especially before you got a Chocobo) was no easy feat, and you needed to make sure you had plenty to do on the other side. The lack of teleporting all over the world and the difficulty of the simple…
I also started on Pandemonium, way back when, later forcibly moved to Asura in one of the server merges. My account (later accounts) have mostly been active from NA PC release until just recently (and I may still go back). FFXI is largely not -as- hard these days, but a lot of the core differences between it and…
I work now i don’t have the time to play it as i used to but i will always remember fondly FFXI, playing for 5 hours straight killing crawlers became almost an instinct.
The best part was that since once you got into the rhythm you could actually talk to people, I had many friends in the game and was very involved in…
It was really interesting to run into this article as my friend and I were JUST talking about FFXI, the memories it generated, and how it stacks up to FFXIV on our way from a jobsite today. The conversation started with him wondering if FFXI or FFXIV was the better MMO and I said that there really isn’t a comparison.…
That post came off a LITTLE more bitter than I would have liked, so let me share a story with you. The images no longer work, but I’m sure people will still appreciate the story:

Long story short, our newbie-friendly Linkshell “Hijacked” the Selbina-Mhuara ferry as a…
I played FFXI from 2004-2009. (Selyndria/Fenrir) I started to lose interest during the Aht Urghan (forgive me if misspelled) expansion. I tried WoW when it came out for around 2 weeks and went back to FFXI. I loved that FFXI was a tough game and the exp parties were probably one of my favorite online gaming…
Got to the paragraph about the Dunes. Had immediate flashbacks to carefully picking my path through there to get to Jeuno and the other cities from Bastok. Good times. Never got that Empress Hairpin from the NM in the Dunes though...
Like many FFXI players, I’ve moved on to the greener pastures of Final Fantasy XIV. And let me tell you: In that game, up to level 42, I haven’t needed anyone’s help. And that’s what makes it a little sad.
I remember Absolute Virtue and how it was impossible to kill, SE had to release “clue” vids about it. Still has some crazy ass technique to it lol
I met some great people in FFXI, it’s a real shame I don’t live near any of them.
I remember buying FFXI at launch with my best friend and being REALLY frustrated, after playing for about a year me and my friend quit. About 6 months later my friend’s friend invited us to switch servers and start again. After reaching lvl 50 and getting stuck at the first limit break for about a week we eventually…
It could be because most people who play FFXIV never played FFXI. They wouldn’t appreciate the complexity and fun factor of dynamis. This makes me sad. FFXI community do not have a voice in the FFXIV community.
There is a free weekend this week if anyone wants to check out the game. It’s still charming as ever, but lots of little improvements in things like travelling and leveling: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/campaig…
I really miss how dynamic ffxi was compared to ffxiv.. You should post this on the Official ffxiv forums but I’m sure it would get down-voted and locked after a few days
