It’s simply the coefficient of friction times the normal force. The coefficient of friction of steel wheel on steel rail is VERY small!!

It didn’t hold a million pounds. The force needed to roll that mass is a tiny fraction of that. Pretty much any vehicle could have done it, as long as it had a clutch that could stand up to getting it moving.
