That’s one reason the A-10's RG is designed that way - in case of failure or damage, there is still some wheel sticking below the AC. Supposedly, that thing can be up and flying again with very little repair.

It was mainly the pilots - watching their instruments, mindlessly believing them, and not trying to simply fly the aircraft. My god - full power, nose-up something like 45degrees, falling rapidly toward the ocean, and yelling at each other, “I can’t get any good instrument readings!!”
