It was probably *not* because you *didn't appreciate* character development, but because you need to be a regular viewer for a few months before you really get into the characters. And, it's hard to jump right in the middle.

For me, the moment that pushed the pilot and, ultimately, the series into the top rank was Sumner's interjection, and the immediate acclamation by the rest of the Cheers patrons, of "Cool Hand Luke" into what Diane considered to be a silly debate on the sweatiest movie ever made.
