I’m old, I want reliability, followed by comfort. If it starts breaking or the interior is shot, it’s gone. I drove garbage that I had to work on in the elements when my kids were young.

The reason people ditch cars that have life left in them, is that it’s easier to make a $500/mo. car payment, for a car that probably has a warranty and likely less to go wrong mechanically, than come up with that $3,500 and be down a vehicle for the duration of the repair.

Modern ICE vehicles are rolling computers as well.

$10k over 5 years is way cheaper than a new truck payment.

I wanted to get a new car. My 2014 Kia’s clear coat is peeling off everywhere. However, since Kia just replaced the engine and transmission, I’m thinking about keeping it and getting a $4K-$5K respray on it in the same color. It only has 78K miles and everything works on it.

Granted, not as self-harming as smoking.  But not even a quick line about how inhaling anything other than air into your lungs is not necessarily a great idea?

They’d have value in a foreign country maybe, but that’s probably beyond the scope of what NYC is trying to accomplish here.
