They tell you who betrayed Jesus right off the bat! Way to ruin the mystery, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!

Luke Evans is playing Wilder in Wheatly's High Rise, so I am guessing Wheatly has a good working relationship with him.

Clicked here to make sure they mentioned "The Cane", did not come away disappointed.

I have not heard of that - thanks!

Yes, that was him. I think in general he was ahead of his time in respect for the cultures he encountered along the way, but this particular landing went terribly awry and he was murdered. The Hawaiians paid dearly for his death. Tony Horowitz's book "Blue Latitudes" tells Cook's story and I probably need to

I should finish "Over the Edge of the World" tonight. It's the story of Magellan's circumnaviagtion and is it ever insane! I read a ton of adventure stories (real-life and otherwise) and I swear this is the craziest, just disaster averted after disaster averte and finally his hubris gets him killed. It makes me

I saw Ragtime in the theatre when I was about 12 - kind of a glorious mess but Howard Rollins Jr is amazing in it, plus a young Brad Dourif!

I took it on a work trip last fall and holed up in my hotel room one afternoon to finish it (rather than doing work - don't tell anyone!).

Do I want non-fiction? Do I want a mystery? Historical fiction?
I will try to stop back here each week, since I do miss talking about books with everyone here. And I haven't been reading as much as I used to so maybe this will be a bit motivating to get me to do something I love doing anyway!

Finished The Ploughmen, which was really good and evoked a real sense of place in the Western U.S. but also managed to feel timeless, much like I imagine that part of the country can feel. Staring at various books on my shelf and just don't know what to pick up. Of course I've written down 5 more books to read just

Sarah Waters is soooo good! Fingersmith in particular is just a cracking good read.

I got half-way through that book (King Leopold's Ghost) about 2 years ago and haven't picked it up since. I really want to know the history of that region without the torture of reading all of the terrible things that happened.

I don't really, I just wanted to see the review of What We Do in the Shadows here and saw the TI and thought I would check out the comments for old times sake :) then I saw the book thread and thought I would jump in. I comment sometimes at The Dissolve, but I have to say I just got a big grin knowing that anyone

Been slowly working my way through The Ploughmen, which is good and keeping me wondering where it is going (more psychological drama than the murder mystery I was expecting) and I have reached the point where I just want a 2-3 hour block of time to finish it instead of reading in fits and spurts.

I really need to revisit the Dortmunder series. What a great set of comic crime novels.

Damn I love this thread.

I feel like I should spend 3 years in jail just for having read that. Jesus Christ.

It was a truly terrible column. I can't believe it turned into "God, have you even SEEN John Cougar recently?!" Jesus Christ, are there no editors at AVC anymore?

Move forward with Tana French. Each novel is really unique in its perspective and the setting of the story.

She was really funny on @midnight.
