Completely agree. Actors who indicate they KNOW they're being funny are the opposite of funny.

I have to agree. One critic — I forget who — said the Danny Castellano character often reacted to Mindy as if he "smelled a foul odor, like bad breath." I'm sure that's not Chris Messina's acting choice, but it's a strange creative choice, in any love story.
