The serpent is commonly a symbol for wisdom within Gnostic perspectives. Literalist christianity is viewed as a perversion. Hence the reason catholicism views the serpent as evil. They would also seek to subjugate any other worldviews and one way to do that is to take their Gods and views and deem them evil.
