Once you discover a love of backroads, all time is out the window.
yeah I wasn't sure on the legality of that. I took ground school a few years ago, but failed my flight medical so it never went anywhere. I remember that you couldn't let your passengers pay for more than half of the gas, or it would be considered a commercial flight.
blame pedestrian safety regs. This was a problem on the new miatas - hopefully Toyota/Subaru make it as easy to drop this as Mazda made it to drop the NC.
Have you ever attempted to post a "passenger wanted" ad on craigslist? Just curious - I don't know what the rules are on rental fees, but at least they'd be able to chip in for 49% of the fuel bill.
600 miles round trip, about 12 hours. 30MPG to make the math easy, that's 20 gallons of gas. At 3.25/gal, that's $75 in gas.

The driver of that van deserves an award for Chillitude. I imagine he has the wheel locked to the left with his knee, reading the paper and smoking.
Sorry, meant to say I grew up in the civilized part of Texas, too ;)
Congratulations, you just described a car meant for an entirely different market segment!
Grew up in Texas and the civilized part of Oklahoma, never could figure out why cars even HAD high beams.
The best part is that the people off the road are always in big 4wds, and the guy with snow tires is usually in a 1993 corolla.
In many situations, the fastest way to stop is to stay off the brakes entirely so you can keep your wheels spinning. Then, steer off the slidy bit, and THEN brake. Watching people sail through intersections with their ABS firing is hilarious good fun, as long as I'm not in the way.
Pft. I drive at safe speeds in my AWD. Therefore, I am much higher up the mountain when I slide off the cliff.
I'm pretty sure the acronym in driver's ed goes like this:
