I posted this elsewhere, but be careful what you wish for. The Gizmodo sites are so badly over-moderated that it completely gutted the commenter community at Deadspin. Disagree with a writer? Grays. Tell an off-color joke that the writer doesn't like? Grayed. And you never are heard from again. Oh, and if you think

That's great, but will we stay out of the grays? I was out of the grays over on Deadspin when they created the current system, disagreed with one of the writers and got kicked into the grays, which is part of the reason why I ended up over here. Which brings up another question: will there be specific guidelines for

In which case it was nice knowing all of you!

Many of whom are approved commenters somehow.

Careful what you wish for on that. Increased monitoring = decreased ability to speak freely based on my previous Kinja experience.

The short version is that, unless you're an "approved" commenter, your posts will not be publicly posted for all to see. They'll be under a "Pending Approval" tab, where either a moderator or approved commenter has to approve your post for publishing. Note that that's usually only a one-time deal, and you only become

And those types of comments will get you grayed in Kinja!

Nothing like a subtle verb tense burn!

You're correct, to the point where the Jez staff basically had to publicly post that it was happening and management was doing nothing about it. I totally get the reason for going that route. But they've taken it about seven steps too far.

I would like to add "REALLY?"

That was a big reason why they went to "promoted" comments and created the dreaded grays. Unfortunately they also got drunk with power and only promoted the commenters who agreed with them, which is not cool.

Are you guys going to over-moderate the comments to death the way that your brethren at GMG do? They put people in the grays over there for just disagreeing with the author, even if you're civil and back it up with facts. I like the fact that we can have an open dialogue over here, and don't want to feel like I have

I would have gone with "She works at the AV Club", but yours is good too.

I too have fallen for the tail…oh wait, we're talking lizards? Nevermind.

No, they just view everything as sexist over there.

This was down at the bottom of the list of the HBO hackers' demands.

I think that's just called "the pub".

That seemed to have more to do with the technical issues they kept having with it than anything we said. It appeared to crash pages when it would pop up, which I'm sure hurt their page views.

That and the moderating is way more heavy-handed. You need to be "approved" to have your comments show up regularly, and lord help you if you anger the mods.

Given that they decided to actually do a commenter "town hall" in 90 minutes, I'll wait and see what they have to say. However, I'm concerned about what they said regarding moderation. If they make this like it is at the GMG sites, where you have to "earn" your way into having your comments seen, I'm out. When the
