I think it goes a little further, it checks the resistance on the jack... larger headphones (over-the-ears, pro-models, etc) that require more power vs. standard mini-drivers... again it’s a feature that’s been on iPhones for a long time, but it’s nice to have this level of ‘intelligent’ reaction from the OS.
