I think the only problem there would be that the tire would look like a 1950’s tire - small wheel, huge sidewall, which people wouldn’t go for.

OK, serious question. Do gated manuals feel the same as their non-gated cousins? It looks like you’d have to be more deliberate in moving the shifter one notch over compared to the more fluid push from second to third I’m used to.
I would like to see them give this treatment to the VW CC.
