Step one by software update - move windows down to allow manual opening to do no damage. This eliminates the need for a warning that the car can be damaged.

I know what you mean on muscle memory - I was the opposite way. Always wore a seat belt in a car or the infrequent airplane trips and getting on a school bus without one was a bit unnerving. Back then there was no padding - just a hard chromed-steel tubular frame to stop against.
