Meanwhile another small, piloted aircraft hit a house in Florida. The two airplane occupants died upon slamming into a house inhabited by a woman and her 2 year old, who were uninjured. This in contrast to a 4 year old killed when a plane hit the SUV the child was riding in last year.
Also typical are gasoline 2 and 4 stroke motors. They started using weedwacker motors in the 197os when the big glow-plug motors were getting expensive along with the nitromethane they depend on. It didn’t take long to get special purpose gasoline 4 strokes.
Not sure if you would believe I know “how aircraft work” but that’s a really wrong take on what I do know.
It looks like a new chemistry: “Here we combine a material-agnostic approach based on asymmetric temperature modulation with a thermally stable dual-salt electrolyte.” I suspect that’s required for the high temperature charging requirement.
The point, BeeMan, is the researchers wrote “convectively cooled,” not liquid cooled with a radiator, not even forced convection. They are targeting vehicle batteries and said, very clearly “convectively cooled.”
I didn’t comment on sink rate. Perhaps I should have started with Bernoulli’s equation and developed the circulation theory of airfoil lift before going into how three dimensional flow around finite spans develops. Add to it that this model was likely also seeing vortex flow development.
Elevation as in altitude?
An airplane is not an artillery piece, and the elevator adds pitch force, which might or might not cause the nose to actually come up - maybe you saw that in the Boeing MAX crashes.
Gliders continuously descend, though if the air is ascending faster, as in a thermal or air blowing up against a cliff or mountain side, they gain height. They can trade speed for height - that’s what leads to stalling if there isn’t enough speed to give up.
The misnamed “elevator” doesn’t elevate the plane, the propulsion system does. If the engine isn’t producing thrust the plane doesn’t go up. The elevator and “trim” control the speed in level flight. More thrust causes the plane to go up and insufficent thrust allows the plane to go down. Trying to fix an insufficient…
I’m puzzled by the claim in the abstract that they feel like it can be convectively cooled in air. They mention that it is heated to almost 200F, so the air temp would be above scalding hot. How would that work with 1000 pounds of battery cells?
All the details of how MCAS worked were available to Ethiopian. There was only outrage after the Ethiopian spokesman claimed their pilots had trained to the procedure and then that they had exactly followed the procedure.
Why it is easy to get mad at Boeing - because the first statements from Ethiopian were that the pilots HAD been trained. Then, when the FDR showed massive failures to follow procedure, Ethiopian again got out there and said that the procedures had been exactly followed and they failed. And they blamed Boeing.…
Boeing didn’t know. That’s the point. Airbus did. What both companies believed is that some failures are so obvious that falling back to manual control would be safe. Since you didn’t read the Lion Air Final Report you cannot understand that point. After Lion Air, about 20,000 Boeing 737 pilots accepted the MAX…
The Ethiopian crash was due to the Ethiopian CAA not seeing if their pilots were trained. It is clear they used all the Lion Air results as toilet paper.
That’s not how the GPS works.
Speed decreases the time available to realize that a collision is coming and take measures to avoid them and decreases the available options for those measures.
I’ve been in favor of chicanes built of New Jersey barriers at 9 foot lane width and random swinging wrecking balls.
In major cities the right lane has merging-on and merging-off traffic going 30-40mph. Anyone forcing me to go that speed because they want to go 80mph is an asshole.
