Gliders continuously descend, though if the air is ascending faster, as in a thermal or air blowing up against a cliff or mountain side, they gain height. They can trade speed for height - that’s what leads to stalling if there isn’t enough speed to give up.

The Ethiopian crash was due to the Ethiopian CAA not seeing if their pilots were trained. It is clear they used all the Lion Air results as toilet paper.
