I live where the utilities and road crews hate drivers. They made a huge project of completely redoing a major stretch of pavement downtown. As soon as it was done the water company tore up a slot the length of it to do some repairs. It was nice for about 3 months. Then it was worse than before the road was redone.

In the US, those will be installed an inch higher than the surrounding pavement or an inch lower. We don’t expect trucks to roll over manhole covers so much as to slam into them with considerable force.
