Some how I have never mangled myself working on a car. Out of all the stuff I have done, everything from changing a door to taking apart an engine, I have been lucky enough to come away with only bleeding knuckles.

On much thinner springs we have used heavy duty zip ties (the ones with the metal clasps) to keep it compressed, around 40 of them spaced around the spring. Once the spring is out we slowly cut the zip ties with a long knife until it springs back.
