In my experience Brazilians speak pretty damn good Spanish yet most Spanish speakers have a devil of a time with Portuguese. I have a good friend who is Brazilian who is married to a Chilean and it burns him that her whole family speaks perfect Spanish to his lousy Portuguese and elementary English.
