I really don’t get your point here, the phrase “commit suicide” comes from suicide being a crime similar to rape and murder. It does not come from a place of helping people who have those thoughts or lost someone due to suicide. It also doesn’t come from a place of understanding serious psychological issues at play.

Wow, what a thread. As someone who has worked in suicide prevention for 20 years,  I was pleased to see a variation of the typical reporting of suicide in this headline. Kudos to Deadspin.

Where exactly are you getting this idea that the guilt and shame of feeling suicidal is the only thing keeping some suicidal people from doing it? You have it completely ass-backwards: the “social pressure” prevents them from seeking help, thereby INCREASING the likelihood of suicide.

The stigma of being suicidal could prevent them from getting help! That’s sort of the point of this conversation...

Removing the stigma is not the same as normalizing suicide. Changing the language is about helping people who are suicidal and their families.
