Actually Downton went downhill in season two, the Great War episodes. When "paralyzed" Matthew arose from the wheelchair it was just too much. I think creator Julian Fellowes just had one decent year in him.

It's purpose is to get adults to think about what it is that our culture does to adolescent girls. It demeans them and makes them doubt their own abilities as they get older.
