I don’t know about that. Sajak has made some really bonkers right wing political comments on Twitter.
Mario Maker! When I was a kid, the original Super Mario Bros. was my first introduction to video games. My dad worked in tech, so we had all sorts of computers and old machines laying around the house, and I went from spending all of my time messing around with a primitive drawing app on the family computer to playing…
I’d assume by digging into the code but can't say for sure.
Exactly. Create a block of marble, and then chip away everything that doesn’t need to be there.
Yeah. I think most peoples’ frame of reference for Spider-Man is young adulthood, post high school (and usually, I’d say, post-college). The Daily Bugle, the balance of making a living vs. playing superhero, and the difficulty of maintaining an adult relationship are the real through lines I see as being archetypal to…
There is no implied chronological meaning to the use of “similar to” here. He’s speaking about why Spider-Man appeals to Japanese fans, so he’s comparing it to a popular character that was born out of Japanese culture.
He’s not saying that Japanese fans like Spider-Man because Spider-Man reminds them of Kamen Rider.…
I have no particular attachment to One Direction, but this seems weirdly intrusive. I could see it from Adult Swim, but otherwise... weird... They could have gotten a similar effect with fictional characters right?
It also doesn’t teach you about the rapid consolidation of wealth that happens in a capitalist system or how to cook the perfect bran muffin...
Because, uh, it’s a game about fighting nazis...
Morrison has a tendency to do “dark” in a way that’s also pretty damn hopeful and crazy. Just look at Final Crisis - a book about nihilism and the death of the universe at the hands of weaponized apathy that’s resolved by Superman singing at Darkseid. His death of Batman story was about an amnesiac Bruce clawing his…
Bowser made me queer. only half joking
I think the Witcher is an especially important choice because there’s a tendency in AAA titles to gameify choice and morality: each decision manifesting as a tick one way or another on an ethical bar, providing tangible in-game rewards for “roleplaying consistently”, setting specific parameters for a “good” ending.…
That’s fair.
Have any games had an impact on how you see the world socially or ideologically in any meaningful way?
Uh, more like Disney protecting their brand by removing something in bad taste from a kid’s movie. but sure. whatever’s clever, my dude
wait, is the character in the blooper reel supposed to be Stinky Pete, or is he supposed to be the “actor” playing Stinky Pete?
I think you really missed the mark here, Joshua. By excising the “castle” from the portmanteau, the title really hones in on what these games are about: playing an android in a city in Transylvania.
Technically almostall of these games take place in the city of Cluj-Napoca, but that’s a bit of a mouthful.
tbf, Gita can only write about the people that respond to her for input.
But fortunately that’s what the comments sections are for. Do you have any examples of a video game moving you politically to the right that you’d like to share?
And, I mean, are you suggesting that “recognizing that Iraqis are people” and…
I mean, Ubisoft is so damn weird. So many of their games center some explicitly controversial real world issues, but they’re *so* adamant about the notion that they aren’t political.
I’m right there with you though. Games don’t need to shy away from contextualized meaning. As one of the few forms of art that employs…
I think it’s a concept sort of like the uncanny valley. They look enough like the movie Avengers that the obvious comparisons are going to be drawn but not distinct enough that we can comfortably say “Oh they’re their own thing”.
They don’t look like a new spin on the Avengers. They look like off-brand Party City MCU…
I think there’s a higher chance that it just won’t happen. Gaiman tends to be protective of his works, and he’s already talked about the shit show of trying to make a Sandman movie years ago. So I suspect it will either be interesting, or it will never be developed.
