They don’t start instantly at that speed. You plug it in, there’s a lock inside the cord that keeps the plug from being disconnected, then the car and charger decide how much current can be delivered, and then the power ramps up to peak rates like this. It does not directly deliver this like plugging in a household…

I don’t think the battery has anything to do with this incident, as you point out in a later post it doesn’t look like the battery was breached as it’s below the floor and just the front appears to have torched here.

I do 105 miles round trip, and am seriously looking forward to getting an EV that can do it. Unfortunately, I don’t always have reliable charging at work, and it gets quite cold here, so with ~50% range degradation (while still getting cabin heat) I need a car with EPA 200 miles+ of range to be able to do round-trip…

Slightly off topic, you can get a car for $20 a day?? Reading the website, looks like you’re expected to “replace the gas you use” and that there may be an additional up to 25% fee on top of that price, and another fee if you’re under 24.

Unfortunately, it’s quite likely that much of the wire insulation has been compromised by the intense heat, so while it kept running for the time there’s a good chance that it will shortly develop strange electrical problems. Have a family friend who lost their detached garage but not their house in one of the other…
