I can honestly say your post helped me out! I found the problem with my root (the bootloader was not unlocked, as I suspected), corrected it, backed everything up and then went ahead and flashed a 4.3 ROM.

Xposed required root to work, and while Xposed and its modules cannot improve battery life or speed, other apps you can install after root DO precisely what you're looking for.

Thanks for posting this- I saw it some time ago when the 4.3 update originally came out but wasn't sure if it was what I was looking for.
