This review seems especially prescient and/or savage (unintentionally so) considering Agent Orange's rise to the White House, and Robin Williams' suicide.

It's a shame that "Scruffy Homeless Beatnik Iago" didn't become as common as the author's "Manic Pixie Dream Girl". It's a useful trope and another filmic archetype - heck, they made a whole movie about one (The Big Lebowski).

What makes it work is that Hanks immerses himself so completely. It's utterly goofy, but one of the best actors alive makes the character complete

Actually, I think the question is very poorly worded. It makes it sound like they're asking for a President (and an event) from 1957.

When Two of a Kind was released (now THERE'S a flop!) I remember one of those made-for-TV reviews where Travolta and Newton-John talked about their most regretted movies.  This was Travolta's, although he had so many.
