This review seems especially prescient and/or savage (unintentionally so) considering Agent Orange's rise to the White House, and Robin Williams' suicide.
It's a shame that "Scruffy Homeless Beatnik Iago" didn't become as common as the author's "Manic Pixie Dream Girl". It's a useful trope and another filmic archetype - heck, they made a whole movie about one (The Big Lebowski).
What makes it work is that Hanks immerses himself so completely. It's utterly goofy, but one of the best actors alive makes the character complete
