I totally agree with this. Why just give up and teach the kids that when they have families of their own, they should just give up too. And another thing: The radios that Harris makes go way beyond armed forces. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when all forms of first responder communication networks were completely destroyed, guess whos radios were used.

The article from Ars is filled with crap. Harris RF has been deploying JTRS standard radios for several years. We make them in Rochester, NY. Below is an example of one such radio, which weighs 12 pounds with a battery attached, not 200! There are also several handheld versions which use JTRS.

The receiver is actually 2 product cycles old now but is an Onkyo TX-NR808. It looks like the TX-NR616 and above all include zones 2 and 3 as well as network control. I suggest watching Newegg for pricing. The 808 sold for $1100 but I get mine for $650 new!
