What do you mean "will happen with filmed media"? It's already happened. Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/Apple/etc have very visible lossy compression. Blurays do have similar lossy compression, but the bitrate is high enough that is not usually visible.

I think you have nailed hoffman's character and story arc in this film. This story being set in a cynical view of the business really helps reinforce the tension. I kind of see it as the flipside of Victor Victoria, which i think was also well done.

"Girlfriend is Better" from this film is what unlocked the Talking Heads for me. I had heard is on the radio before seeing the film, and was converted into a real fan.
