This is very true. It is also true that humans are a cowardly lot who don’t trust what they can’t understand. It’s funny, but your reverse example also proves your point straight—the part of Watchmen that, to me, worked the best was the modifications to the ending. Not only did it let them drop about an hour and a half of backstory, but it actually worked very well on its own.
