Google says in 1824 the US revamped the imperial system and a lot of units are now different (some lengths but a lot of the volumes got simplified), hence the need for the new name of 'customary system' though. Its basic but its also a classic. Unlike a lot of other dips people use it not only for chips but also veggies so they can pretend to be healthy (while eating 4 oz of sour cream with 6 baby carrots). I think that's what makes it so popular, its more versatile than say salsa.

Actually in that context it is. When you say "In America" it implies the US (whether it should or not is debatable, but it does), you would say "In the Americas" to talk about all of them.
