As for the lines thing. I think its because a lot of people who bet don't take this into account (or at least don't weight it heavily) so they're probably still doing OK with where people are placing their money.

That would be valid if they didn't give them a numerical score and compare those scores with each other. It may be more difficult to compare but they did, that's what those columns are all about. Another commenter pointed out the obvious - the Guardian sorted the scores by math for this article and these rankings.

So, I guess looking at these rankings math is by far what is used and the others seem to matter a lot less? That seems silly.
