I imagine the plastic fenders will be widened for the sti... a lot easier than widening the actual body. Maybe the will even paint them but not holding my breath. Probably a popular aftermarket modification will be to paint them, or just hide it by wrapping them/the whole car.

Might have to do with the current lease culture in the US. If the car is going to be harder to resell due to the color, then why sell it in the first place. Maybe don’t offer the ‘cool’ colors on leases? Then you have Ford, offering chameleon paint and bright colors on the more exciting models for some time now...
