I hadn't thought about the Twin Peaks connection, but that's absolutely spot-on for the things I love most about Link's Awakening. Koholint Island felt like a wholly different place (because it was!) and the characters felt rich and nuanced, despite being only so few pixels and bleeps. I cared a great deal more about

My greatest problem with Spirit Tracks was that the majority of sidequests didn't open up until you were 80-90% through the main quest. By the time I'd finished two or three side-stories, I'd completely forgotten what I needed to do to finish the central adventure.
