The problem is that doing that by saying certain characters have to be played by people from certain races inherently perpetuates the idea that people should be divided by race regardless of the intentions behind it.

I was with you until you started talking about multiplayer games. Multiplayer games are even more tedious and repetitive than long single-player games that have a lot of stuff thrown in to just pad out the playtime.
