The money China is throwing around is government aided with the idea that the teams will be able to spend all of their own money in a few years if the league ever grows in popularity, I seriously doubt this will happen and I imagine once the Government money dries up so will decent players going to that league.
NHL revenue is actually negative in the states, the Canadian Tv deals is what keeps the league making money, I haven't looked at MLS revenue overall but theoretically the MLS could be considered more financially successful in the US than the NHL.
