Sadly keeping dogs as family pets is considered haram in Islam.

Not sure what religion has to do with anything. Cats have a deeply rooted place in middle eastern cultures. Their veneration predates Islam, and so Islam just carried on the middle eastern tradition of fascination with cats. Other faiths exist in that part of the world, it’s their culture too.
