They probably were at the beginning of the season. That win qualified Newtown for states, I believe (at least I'm pretty sure 40% qualifies for boys basketball... it's either that or 50%), but it was also probably the usual Connecticut high school sports apathy.

As per the CIAC website, 57-56 was the right score. As we've seen, though, ESPN completely overshot the target when it comes to proofreading.

I'd say it's because Sandy Hook is in Connecticut, but ESPN can't even spell "Newtown" correctly. If this happened in Westport, nobody would ever misspell "Staples".

Sure, they're 8-8 and on pace to make the state playoffs, but it's safe to say that with a team field goal percentage of 37%, it's not because of Newtown's shooting.
