An automatic bid only gets you into the 68 team pool. You don't get to bypass the play-in games. For instance, in 2014, the play-in games were NC State v Xavier, Albany v Mt St Mary's, Iowa v Tennessee and Cal Poly v Texas Southern.
I've always thought that the play-in games should be for the last 8 teams in. Let all the automatic bids start playing on Thursday/Friday. But if you had the last teams in playing each other, it would be big name schools and would get really high ratings.
