There was the high pressure fuel pump issues on the 2009-2014 2.0 TDI, that rate was actually pretty low(NTSB performed an investigation). 2009 had the highest rate of around 1 percent or so. Improvements afterwards brought the failure rate down a lot lower than that.

Fwiw, the noise of a diesel engine is dependant upon the injectors and timing. The old ones(mostly 90-06) had single event direct injection, they’d have the loud bang/rattle. Multiple injection events with pilot injection has made some of the newer quieter than the DI gas engines.

That’s the nature of a mechanical injection pump when still cold, especially with the way it’s tuned. What you’re hearing is the engine likely revving up from the ether(you can see him spraying a can of ether), it lets off the fueling, then drops low enough that the governor gives it fuel again, rinse and repeat.

The Ecoboost takes a bigger hit. But it’ll still have a towing range that’s equal or greater than the standard lightning range, along with easy to pull in refueling when towing.

Exactly. With today’s technology, they’re perfect for applications that are currently the target for CNG. A lot of these issues are also what keeps CNG from expanding.

The Malone tune is fine, but an aftermarket intake on a TDI is always a deal breaker. 

Fortunately, the newer diesels have particulate filters, no concern about particulate emissions if you don’t delete the DPF. 

The windshield might be made out of unobtanium. I’m not sure how the supply is for the Passat, but it’s impossible to get a replacement for some of the other vehicles out there right now.

It does the best it can for factoring well to pump emissions(including what’s loss from vapor for filling of gas vehicles), manufacturing emissions, pump to wheel emissions, and you can even select the source for electricity(solar, wind, coal, etc).

PM emission is very bad for the environment. Fortunately, Cummins has the PM2.5 emission output on their medium duty diesels down to levels lower than the levels of a Prius(per California Air and Research Board). They’re lower than the brake dust emissions.
