What’s the root approved distance in order for cops to engage a knife wielding psychopath in broad daylight?

‘Don’t shoot him, he’s gonna put it down, we know him,’. Apparently you don’t! Why didn’t one of the cops allow this guy to stab them so they could take they knife away. Would that have pleased everyone and diffused the situation? Black man doesn’t have weapon and cop is stabbed, everyone is happy.
