Nope, they're not.

“This is advice to a new programmer”

I don’t know, to me engineering implies “methodology”. A non-engineer will get the job done. He will write code the way someone paint a wall. They’ll apply code here, there, until it work as intended. It’s going to be a mess of a code, difficult to maintain or change, and if someone else jumps in the code they will

“a humble attitude”

100% this. I’m not sure how one goes about to learn how to program in a very general, vague approach. I learned programming exactly the way you describe it, some 35 years ago.

I was one of those H1B holder, my apologizes ;-) Got my green card 5 years ago, and only a few months away to be eligible for my citizenship. What a crazy ride it has been. Soon I’ll be the one competing against these damn foreigners!

“This is all to quantify your enthusiasm for programming. If you like programming, you’re not waiting for a boss to tell you what to do, you’re doing it.”

It’s not as much how low level or high level you code in. It’s *how* you go about coding and architecturing your systems.

“It’s a case of engineers are developers, but developers are not necessarily engineers.”

Ugh. As a professional programmer for 25+ years, seeing html represented as “coding” makes my face twitch.

Ah! right, that make sense :)

I don't get it. All of these movies at $5 shows up at much more than $5 when I follow the links.

It's not a trend, it's a type of gameplay. For people with different tastes than yours.

"but it is astounding how many people just accept this outdated custom"

Uh what? I'm a Canadian who moved to the US some 15 years ago. I don't think I've ever encountered a single restaurant that didn't take credit cards. And I pretty much eat out every days.

I disagree. "Divide by 10 then times 2" is way easier than using any shitty app.

Chess doesn't translate to life either.
