I find the way Americans create this fetish of what they think Japan was and currently is just so bizarre. Everyone seems to think that all of Japan is Tokyo and all of Tokyo is the anime crap. As per historical periods, apparently Americans took the “Last Samurai” to be a historical documentary.

You are looking for a fight rather than trying to share concepts and having a civil discussion.

Thanks for sharing. io9 crowd gets borderline upset about anything that goes against what they believe, and that can be “science can solve anything” to create some bullshit utopia.

WHAT civil government? Japan was run by the Big Six, and the only two civilians in that group were outvoted and feared assassination if they pushed too hard.

And the randomness of it as well. Nagasaki was never even meant to be a target. I was at my employer’s factory. It is ground zero as the backup target when the clouds over Kokura prevented that city from being hit.

I agree with you that the atomic bombings did not break the back of the military leaders in Japan solely. If that were the case, there would not have been an attempted political coup by the military to continue fighting the war. I view the combined loss of Manchuria to the Soviets, along with the Atomic Bombings, that

At least for me, the concept that if the US had not used the bombs means that lives would have been saved...that makes no sense to me.

This is not even debatable. About two weeks prior to the atomic bombings and about a month prior to the planned US invasion, the Japanese High Command briefed the Emperor about the US invasion. They had successfully predicted the location of the invasion and the relative time frame. At that meeting, the Emperor was

The word you were looking for was immoral, not inmoral (there is no such word).

I think it’s more people fighting against the frankly laughable idea that a nation at war shouldn’t use the most effective method for ending a war with the fewest deaths of their own people.

I forgive you. It happens to everyone eventually.

What makes you think the world would be any more stable and less warlike without nuclear weapons?

Um, not really. What I hear is “I haven’t researched the topic but I want to tell myself I’m a good person so I’ll say any argument against me is irrelevant.” Noob.

Or, worse, the blockade that King and Nimitz were about to force on Truman. It would have starved way more than 130,000 to death by spring of ‘46.

Your kidding, right? So, 300k dead between Hiroshima and Nagasaki vs 500k Dead U.S. Soldiers, many Million dead Japanese, and a split occupation of Japan by the Soviet Union and the U.S. Thats the likeliest of outcomes if the U.S. hadn’t had used the bomb.

They did save lives, can you imagine the number of deaths if the US had been forced to invade Japan?

Mechs are something I cannot read about, it just seems like such a visual concept, it needs to be seen to work for me.

I’m not sure wht PKD would think of giant Mechas in the sequel to Man in the High Castle.... :)

I thought that article cover pic was concept art for Pacific Rim 2 :(
